Increasing stability and growing confidence

- Since the Democratic Republic of Congo's cessation from Belgium in the 1960s, the country has gone through an extended period of political and social unrest, most recently a five-year civil war in which an estimated three million people died through fighting, malnutrition or disease

- However free and fair elections in 2006 elected President Kabila which signalled an end to the transitional government and the foundation of a new government which was announced in late February 2007 and sworn in during March 2007

- With an established government and its substantial mineral wealth, the DRC represents an excellent opportunity for the development of natural resources and confidence in the DRC is growing

- The introduction of a new Mining Code in 2002, sponsored by the World Bank, has been key to attracting investment. Over US$2.1billion in capital was committed to DRC mining projects in 2006 and 2007. In 2007, the country's economy grew 6.1%
